What to see in Riva del Garda?

As you know, our blog wasn’t just created to talk about Astoria Resort, but also to offer useful info and answer some of our guests’ most frequent questions. ‘What is there to see in Riva del Garda?’ is one of those.

Are you ready to follow us through the streets of the northernmost town on the shores of Lake Garda?

Our tour starts from Astoria Rresort, about 500 meters away from the first point of interest, and from the centre of Riva del Garda.

Church of the Inviolata

On the first stop on our itinerary, you’ll have the chance to contemplate the magnificent paintings of the tiny Church of the Inviolata. The church may indeed be diminutive in size, but it is a wonderful example of Baroque art, with an octagonal plan and five altars, all richly decorated with valuable paintings. This is a real treat for art history lovers!Afterwards, we’ll carry on walking along Via Roma, then we’ll cross the ancient Porta San Michele reaching the historic centre. Surrounded by a moat and colourful flower beds, you’ll see the Rocca.

Rocca of Riva del Garda

Throughout history, the Rocca has always been the heart of Riva del Garda - and nowadays it is home to the MAG, the city museum. Festivals, sporting competitions and the famous Notte di Fiaba (Fairy Tale Night) with its fireworks are held is in the open space in front of the ancient stronghold. If you find yourself here in late August, have a sit in the Rocca park - it is one of the best places to watch the fireworks display, or simply to relax in the shade in its vast garden. At Christmas time, the Rocca becomes ‘Santa's House’ - don't miss it if you’re travelling with your children!

Apponale Tower

The time has come to climb the 34 meters of the Apponale Tower! It is one of the symbols of Riva del Garda, open from March to October, and certainly a privileged viewpoint to observe the city from above. Haven't you been there yet? Only 165 steps separate you from the 360-degree panoramic view of the lake and the streets of the historic centre.

The centre of Riva and shopping

At this stage, it’s time to treat yourself to a drink by the lake, you deserve it!We recommend wandering around the historic centre, and maybe doing some shopping – head to Piazza Erbe for elegant boutiques, then to Viale Dante and Via Fiume to find that perfect souvenir. Choose between Italian fashion, leather goods and small food shops fully stocked with Garda food and wine products.

The Bastione

If you look up from the town hall, next to the Tower and the moored boats, you will see an immaculate fortress surrounded by trees - it is the Bastione of Riva del Garda. This ancient sentry tower was built in the 16th century, to guard the port and the entire city. To reach the Bastione, just walk up a short paved road. It’s very steep but worth the effort - from up there, the view is magnificent!

The lakefront and the beaches

Now it’s time to relax! What’s better than a sunny bench by the lake, or a quiet spot on the beach? Heading back to the Rocca and towards the tourist area of Riva, you will reach the Spiaggia degli Ulivi, a restaurant overlooking the lake and colourful Italian gardens. If you carry on following the shore, you can rest on large grassy and pebble beaches, equipped with restrooms, bars, and playgrounds, suitable for all needs.

Our tour of Riva del Garda ends here. How about you, did you like it?If you want to learn more, check our posts about the Ponale path and the Varone waterfalls. They are some of Riva’s must-see attractions!
